Giraffes 101

This website is about Giraffes. Facts

Here are some interesting facts about giraffes you prabably didn't know. Enjoy.

Fact #1: A giraffe's neck is too short to reach the ground. As a result, it has to awkwardly spread its front legs or kneel to reach the ground for a drink of water

Fact #2:Giraffes only need 5 to 30 minutes of sleep in a 24-hour period! They often achieve that in quick naps that may last only a minute or two at a time.

Fact #3:It was thought that giraffes did not make any sounds, this is now known to be untrue, as giraffes bellow, snort, hiss and make flute-like sounds, as well as low pitch noises beyond the range of human hearing

Fact #4:Despite the females’ attempts to stand over their calves during attacks by lions, spotted hyenas, leopards and African wild dogs, many calves are killed in their first few months

Fact #5:There are four different giraffe species, and no two girrafe's have the same pattern (Very similar to human fingerprints)

Giraffe Manor

Giraffe Manor is a small, private hotel where guests can feed the giraffe from their breakfast table, through the front door, and out of their 2nd story bedroom window.

Giraffe Manor is a small hotel in the Lang'ata suburb of Nairobi, Kenya which, together with its associated Giraffe Centre, serves as a home to a number of endangered Rothschild giraffes, and operates a breeding programme to reintroduce breeding pairs back into the wild to secure the future of the subspecies.

What Can You Do?

While giraffes are under less of a population threat than elephants or rhinos, their population has declined 40% over the past 50 years. To help preserve giraffe populations, boycott products made with giraffe body parts and encourage others to do the same.
